Andreas was a little under the weather and called in Brendan Eich CTO at Mozilla to join him. The presentation ends with some top notch questions and answers from Andreas and Brendan.

Write up from Sid Maestre on the Bay Area Mobile Event page:

Over the last decade Mozilla successfully created the modern web by pioneering open standards many browser vendors went on to implement, creating a competitive and interoperable desktop web environment. The mobile space has developed very differently, however. While the desktop is today an open web-based platform, mobile operating systems are dominated by single-vendor proprietary silos like Android and iOS. Mozilla has set out to create a truly open mobile smartphone OS based on the web: Boot 2 Gecko. In my talk I will explain the origins of the project, give a couple demos and talk about the down and dirty technical details of making a web-based smartphone. Andreas Gal is the Director of Research & Development for Mozilla and manages a team of engineers and researchers working on a broad range of topics with the goal of making the Web more awesome, including a new web-based smartphone OS: Boot2Gecko. Andreas joined Mozilla in 2008 to implement his dissertation research on trace compilation in Mozilla’s Firefox browser. After shipping the first just-in-time compiler for JavaScript in Firefox, Andreas went on to co-create Mozilla’s research group. Andreas received his Master’s degree from the University of Magdeburg in Germany in 2000 and his PhD from the University of California, Irvine in 2006.
